What is HiPP Kindermilch 1+?
HiPP Kindermilch 1+ is a German EU Organic certified toddler milk for children from 12 months, made from skimmed milk with lactose as its only carbohydrate and fortified with iron, calcium, vitamin D and DHA. One 600g box makes roughly 55 cups of 150ml — about 280 fl oz in total.
The first thing to be clear about: this is not infant formula. It is a milk drink for a child who is already eating solid food, and it is not designed to be anybody's sole source of nutrition. Your toddler's plate does the heavy lifting; Kindermilch is a top-up in a cup once or twice a day.
So why not just pour cow's milk? Because at twelve months a toddler's diet is often narrow and their iron stores are running down after a year of rapid growth. Whole cow's milk is high in protein, contains almost no usable iron, and is not a vitamin D source. Kindermilch 1+ answers exactly that gap: protein reduced to 1.1g per 100ml, plus 1.2mg iron, 120mg calcium and 2.3µg vitamin D in the same 100ml.
It sits at the end of HiPP's organic Combiotik line, after Stage 3, carrying the same GOS prebiotic fibre and Lactobacillus fermentum hereditum culture your baby had in infancy — plus Metafolin, the bioactive form of folate the body can use without converting it first. The carbohydrate is lactose alone, with no added starch or maltodextrin.
On certification, one correction worth stating plainly, because our own listing used to get it wrong: HiPP Kindermilch 1+ is EU Organic certified, not Demeter. Demeter is the stricter biodynamic standard and in our catalogue it belongs to Holle, not to HiPP. If biodynamic farming is what you are shopping for, Holle Stage 4 is the box you want and we stock it.
What's in HiPP Kindermilch 1+ per 100ml?
Prepared as directed, every 100ml provides 54 kcal, 3.0g fat, 1.1g protein, 5.3g carbohydrate of which 5.0g is naturally occurring milk sugar, 120mg calcium, 1.2mg iron, 2.3µg vitamin D and 8.1mg DHA from fish oil. The prebiotic is GOS made from lactose, and the culture is Lactobacillus fermentum hereditum.

The sugars figure is lactose naturally present in milk, not added sugar — there is no sucrose, starch or maltodextrin in this box. Also contains Metafolin (calcium-L-methylfolate), biotin and vitamins A, B2, B12, C and D. Declared allergens: milk and fish.
Is toddler milk better than cow's milk at 12 months?
Honestly: for a toddler eating a varied diet, plain whole cow's milk is fine and cheaper. Kindermilch earns its place when the diet is narrow — a fussy eater, a child off iron-rich foods, or a family cutting back on meat — because it is lower in protein and fortified with the iron, vitamin D and DHA cow's milk does not supply.
The protein number is the concrete part. Whole cow's milk carries roughly 3.3g of protein per 100ml. HiPP Kindermilch 1+ carries 1.1g — about a third — which is closer to what a one-year-old's kidneys and growth actually call for, and is the main reason paediatric nutritionists advise against cow's milk as a major drink before twelve months at all.
Then there is iron. A year of fast growth runs down the iron stores a baby is born with, and cow's milk is a famously poor source — worse, drinking a lot of it can crowd out iron-rich food. Each 150ml cup of Kindermilch 1+ carries about 1.8mg of iron, 180mg of calcium and 12mg of DHA, and that is the honest case for it.
What it is not is a necessity. Some paediatric bodies argue toddler milk is unnecessary for a well-fed child, and that is a fair position. Treat this as a convenient nutritional top-up rather than a box you must buy, and if your toddler eats well and widely, you may not need it at all.
Bars are to scale against each other. The cow's milk figure is a typical published value for whole milk, not a measurement of any particular carton.
Toddler milk supplements a varied diet — it does not replace one. Talk to your paediatrician if you are worried about your child's iron or growth.
What is not in HiPP Kindermilch 1+?
No added starch, no maltodextrin and no added sucrose — lactose is the only carbohydrate, which is unusual in the toddler-milk aisle where starch and maltodextrin are common fillers. It is EU Organic certified. It does contain palm oil among its vegetable oils, and fish oil for DHA, so it is not vegetarian.
- No added starch
- No maltodextrin

How does HiPP Kindermilch 1+ compare to Holle Stage 4 and HiPP 3 Junior?
All three are organic European toddler milks from 12 months. Holle Stage 4 is the only one of the three that is Demeter biodynamic certified. HiPP Kindermilch 1+ is the only one with lactose as its sole carbohydrate — Holle Stage 4 adds starch and maltodextrin.

Being straight with you: Holle Stage 4 holds Demeter biodynamic certification, which is a stricter farming standard than the EU Organic certification HiPP holds. If that is what you are buying on, Holle is the better box and we stock it — HiPP is not Demeter and never has been, whatever this page used to say. Note also that HiPP 3 Junior comes in a smaller 500g box, so compare by prepared volume rather than by price per box. HiPP Kindermilch 1+ wins on carbohydrate: lactose only, where Holle Stage 4 adds starch and maltodextrin.
How many boxes of HiPP Kindermilch 1+ will my toddler need per month?
One 600g box makes roughly 55 cups of 150ml, about 280 fl oz in total. For a toddler having one milk drink a day that is around half a box to one box a month; at two cups a day, about one to two boxes; at three cups a day, roughly one and a half to two and a half boxes.
Published estimates put a typical 1+ toddler on two daily milk drinks at about 2 boxes a month, which sits at the top of the two-cup band below — real cups are rarely finished to the millilitre. Count the cups your child actually drinks and order from that.
Estimates only. Toddler milk supplements solid food rather than replacing it, so how much your child drinks will vary week to week — use these for planning, not as a target.
How do you prepare HiPP Kindermilch 1+?
Boil fresh water and let it cool to 40–50°C, pour 135ml of the measured water into a clean cup or bottle first, add 3 level 3.6g scoops, shake or stir until fully dissolved, cool to body temperature, test it, and serve. That makes about 150ml — 5.1 fl oz. Discard anything not finished within an hour.
Clean everything
Wash your hands and use a thoroughly clean cup, bottle and scoop — sterilising is still sensible if you use bottles.
Boil and cool to 40–50°C
Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius before mixing.
Water in first
Measure 135ml of the cooled water into the cup or bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.
Add three level scoops
Add 3 level 3.6g scoops, levelling each against the edge — never heap or pack the powder down.
Shake or stir
Shake or stir until fully dissolved and no powder is left clinging to the sides. This makes about 150ml.
Cool, test, serve
Cool under running water to about 37°C, check the temperature yourself, then give it in an open or free-flow cup.
Please read before buying
HiPP Kindermilch 1+ is a toddler milk drink for children from 12 months, not an infant formula and not a sole source of nutrition. It is intended to supplement a varied diet of solid food, not to replace it, and it is not suitable for babies under one year. Breastfeeding is best for your baby — talk to your health visitor or doctor before starting or changing a milk.
Store boxes in a cool, dry place, away from steam and direct sun. Once opened, keep the inner bag folded closed and use the box within 2 to 3 weeks. Never reheat or microwave prepared milk.
Packaging & boxes
A minor cosmetic dent in the outer carton is not a safety problem — the powder sits in a sealed inner bag. What does matter is a carton that has been punctured, or an inner seal that is broken or already open. If you receive one like that, do not use it; message us and we will replace it.
HiPP Kindermilch 1+: frequently asked questions
Is HiPP Kindermilch 1+ Demeter certified?
No. HiPP Kindermilch 1+ holds EU Organic certification only. Demeter is a separate and stricter biodynamic farming certification, and in our catalogue it belongs to Holle, not to HiPP — HiPP does not hold Demeter certification on any of its formulas. An earlier version of this listing described the milk as Demeter certified; that was incorrect and has been removed. If Demeter biodynamic sourcing is what you want in a toddler milk, Holle Stage 4 is the product that genuinely carries it.
Is HiPP Kindermilch 1+ a baby formula?
No. It is a toddler milk, sometimes called a growing-up milk, for children who have already turned one and are eating solid food. Unlike infant formula, it is not designed or regulated to be a sole source of nutrition, and it must not be given to a baby under twelve months in place of formula or breast milk. Think of it as a fortified milk drink that fills specific gaps — iron, vitamin D, DHA — alongside meals, not instead of them.
Does my toddler actually need toddler milk instead of cow's milk?
Not necessarily, and it is worth saying so. For a one-year-old eating a varied diet that includes iron-rich foods, plain whole cow's milk is perfectly adequate and considerably cheaper. Toddler milk makes the most sense when the diet is narrow: a fussy eater, a child refusing meat or fortified cereals, or a family where iron intake is a genuine concern. Some paediatric bodies consider toddler milks unnecessary for well-fed children, and that is a reasonable position to hold.
How much prepared milk does one 600g box make?
Mixing three level 3.6-gram scoops with 135ml of water gives about 150ml, or 5.1 fluid ounces, per cup. A 600g box holds enough powder for roughly 55 of those cups, which works out at approximately 280 fluid ounces in total. For a toddler having two milk drinks a day, published estimates put usage at around two boxes a month; one drink a day will stretch a box considerably further.
What comes before and after HiPP Kindermilch 1+?
Before it comes HiPP Stage 3 Bio Combiotik, the follow-on milk for babies from around ten to twelve months. After it comes HiPP Kindermilch 2+, which is formulated for children from twenty-four months with slightly less energy and fat as solid food takes over more of the diet. There is no need to rush either change — move when your child reaches the age band and their eating is going well, and introduce the new box over a few days.
Can I serve it in an open cup rather than a bottle?
Yes, and from twelve months an open or free-flow cup is generally the better choice. Dental and paediatric guidance encourages moving away from bottles during the second year, because prolonged sucking on milk is harder on new teeth and can displace appetite for food. Serve Kindermilch at a mealtime or as a snack rather than letting your toddler sip it continuously through the day, and never send a cup of milk to bed with them.
Does HiPP Kindermilch 1+ contain palm oil?
Yes. The vegetable oil blend in this box is palm, rapeseed and sunflower oil, so if you are specifically avoiding palm oil this is not the toddler milk for you. HiPP sources its palm oil under organic certification as part of the product's EU Organic status, but it is present. The DHA also comes from fish oil rather than algae, which means the milk is not vegetarian and carries fish alongside milk as a declared allergen.
