What is HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic Kindermilch?

HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic Kindermilch is a European toddler milk for children from 12 months, made from skimmed milk and lactose with a GOS prebiotic and a live lactic acid culture. It is a milk drink to sit alongside solid food, not an infant formula. One 500 g box makes roughly 150 fl oz of prepared milk — about 30 five-ounce cups.

The question most parents actually have at this age is whether a growing-up milk is worth buying at all when there is whole cow's milk in the fridge. The honest answer turns on protein. HiPP puts 1.1 g of protein in every 100 ml here, against roughly 3.3 g per 100 ml in whole cow's milk — a deliberate reduction, not a shortfall, and HiPP's own stated reason for the product existing.

The rest of the argument is fortification. Every 100 ml carries 120 mg calcium, 1.2 mg iron and 2.3 µg vitamin D — enough that a single 100 ml serving covers 46% of a toddler's daily vitamin D reference intake, 15% of the calcium reference intake and 9% of the iron reference intake. That is the trade you are making: less protein, more of the minerals a one-year-old is still building bone and blood with.

It also keeps the Combiotic system that ran through HiPP's infant stages — galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) made from lactose, plus a natural lactic acid culture, Limosilactobacillus fermentum, which HiPP describes as originally obtained from breast milk. Many brands drop the culture once a child passes twelve months. HiPP does not. The powder is gluten-free, and this box belongs to HiPP's organic Combiotic range.

What's in HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic per 100ml?

Prepared as directed, every 100 ml of HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic provides 54 kcal, 3.0 g fat, 1.1 g protein and 5.3 g carbohydrate, plus 120 mg calcium, 1.2 mg iron and 2.3 µg vitamin D. The carbohydrate is lactose, the prebiotic is GOS made from lactose, and the DHA comes from fish oil.

What is not in HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic?

No added starch, no maltodextrin and no gluten — the only carbohydrate on the ingredient list is lactose, and every 5.3 g of carbohydrate per 100 ml is naturally occurring milk sugar rather than added sweetener. There are no GMO ingredients. It does contain palm oil, which HiPP states is sustainably sourced, and it contains fish oil, so it is not suitable for a vegetarian diet.

Comparison

How does HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic compare to HiPP Kindermilch 1+ and HiPP Dutch Stage 4?

All three are HiPP toddler milks with the same Combiotic prebiotic-and-culture system and near-identical nutrition per 100 ml. What actually separates them is age and box size: HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic is a 500 g box from 12 months, Kindermilch 1+ is a 600 g box from 12 months, and Dutch Stage 4 is an 800 g box aimed at two years and up.

Being straight with you: on recipe these three are close relatives, so the deciding factor is usually age and size. HiPP Kindermilch 1+ is the better-documented box of the three — 600 g rather than this one's 500 g, EU Organic confirmed on its own label, and it carries Metafolin, the bioactive folate form. If your child is already past two, HiPP Dutch Stage 4 is an 800 g box built for that age with more vitamin D per 100 ml. Because the three boxes are 500 g, 600 g and 800 g, compare them by prepared fluid ounces rather than by shelf price. One further honesty note on this box: HiPP lists Junior Combiotic within its organic range, but we were not able to re-confirm an organic certification mark on this specific box, so read the mark printed on the box you receive as the final word.

Planning ahead

How many boxes of toddler milk will my child need per month?

It depends almost entirely on how many cups a day your child drinks. One 500 g box of HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic makes roughly 150 fl oz of prepared milk, so a toddler having one cup a day uses about 1 to 1.5 boxes a month, two cups a day about 2 to 3 boxes, and three cups a day about 3 to 4 boxes.

Unlike infant formula, toddler milk is a top-up rather than a full diet, so the range here is genuinely wide — a child eating well at the table may drink far less than one who is still milk-led. These figures are calculated from this box's own mixing ratio of 11.3 g of powder to 90 ml of water, using a 150 ml (5 fl oz) cup as the unit.

Estimates calculated from this box's stated mixing ratio. Every child drinks differently — use these for planning, not as a target.

Preparation

How do you prepare HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic?

Boil fresh water and let it cool to about 45 °C, pour the measured water into a sterilised cup or bottle first, then add 2 level scoops (about 11.3 g) for every 90 ml of water, shake until fully dissolved, check the temperature on your wrist and serve straight away.

1

Sterilise first

Wash and sterilise the cup or bottle, lid and scoop before you start, and wash your hands.

2

Boil and cool

Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to roughly 45 °C before mixing, as the box directs.

3

Water in first

Pour the measured water into the cup or bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.

4

Add level scoops

Add 2 level scoops, about 11.3 g, for every 90 ml of water, levelling each scoop against the edge of the box.

5

Cap and shake

Close the cup or bottle and shake until no powder is left clinging to the sides.

6

Check and serve

Test a drop on the inside of your wrist to check it is comfortably warm, then serve it straight away.

Never use artificially softened water or water that has been boiled more than once. Make each drink fresh, never reheat and never microwave, and throw away anything your child does not finish rather than keeping it for later.

Questions parents ask

HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic: frequently asked questions

What age is HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic for?

HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic Kindermilch is intended for children from 12 months onward. It is a toddler milk, also called a growing-up milk, which means it is designed as a milk drink alongside a varied diet of solid food rather than as a sole source of nutrition the way an infant formula is. There is no upper age limit printed as a cut-off; most families use it through the second year.

Is toddler milk better than cow's milk for a one-year-old?

It is different rather than automatically better, and the difference is measurable. HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic contains 1.1 g of protein per 100 ml, against roughly 3.3 g per 100 ml in whole cow's milk, and it is fortified so that a 100 ml serving supplies 120 mg calcium, 1.2 mg iron and 2.3 µg vitamin D — 46% of a toddler's daily vitamin D reference intake. If your child eats a wide diet and drinks cow's milk happily, cow's milk is not a problem. Toddler milk is most useful where you want the lower protein load and the added iron and vitamin D in the same cup.

How much prepared milk does one 500 g box make?

Roughly 150 fl oz. The box is mixed at 11.3 g of powder to 90 ml of water, which gives about 44 servings of 100 ml, or about 30 cups of 5 fl oz. That figure is calculated from the box's own stated mixing ratio rather than printed on the pack, so treat it as a close estimate for planning rather than an exact guarantee.

Does HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic contain a probiotic?

Yes. The ingredient list includes a natural lactic acid culture, Limosilactobacillus fermentum, which HiPP describes as originally obtained from breast milk, alongside galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) made from lactose as the prebiotic. That pairing is what HiPP means by Combiotic. It is worth knowing that many brands drop live cultures from their toddler milks entirely, and that HiPP's own UK-market Organic Combiotic infant milks are prebiotic-only — the culture in this box is not universal across the HiPP range.

What comes before and after HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic?

Before it, most families are on a stage 3 follow-on milk such as HiPP Stage 3 Bio Combiotik, or on a stage 2 follow-on milk through the second half of the first year. After it, HiPP's next step up is the 2+ years toddler milk, and HiPP's Dutch range offers a Stage 4 growing-up milk aimed at two years and over. Many children simply move to ordinary cow's milk at some point in the second year instead.

Is HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic gluten-free, and does it contain allergens?

The powder is gluten-free. It does contain milk and it contains fish oil, so it is unsuitable for anyone avoiding fish, and it is not suitable for a vegetarian diet. It is not a formula for a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy — it is made from ordinary skimmed milk with intact milk protein. If your child has a diagnosed allergy, speak to your doctor or dietitian before using any milk drink.

Can I still breastfeed while giving HiPP 3 Junior Combiotic?

Yes. Toddler milk is a supplementary drink, not a replacement feeding system, so it sits perfectly well alongside continued breastfeeding and alongside meals. Breastfeeding remains recommended for as long as it suits you and your child. If you are unsure how much milk your toddler should be drinking in a day, your health visitor or doctor is the right person to ask.
