How many boxes will my baby need?
Running out mid-week means a late-night store run, or switching formula on your baby. Work out how much to keep on hand.

Breast milk is best for babies. These are stock-planning estimates, not feeding advice. Every baby is different — always follow the feeding table on the box and your paediatrician's guidance on how much your baby should actually take.
Ranges assume the standard one-scoop-per-30ml preparation. Real usage shifts with growth spurts, starting solids, and how much formula ends up on the floor.
What is HiPP PRE PUR?
HiPP PRE PUR is a German organic infant formula suitable from birth, made with organic whey and 18% organic whole milk powder, with lactose as its only carbohydrate, no starch and no palm oil. One box is 500 g — about 132 fl oz of prepared formula, roughly 26 bottles of 5 oz, or the 39 bottles of 100 ml HiPP counts on the pack.
PUR is new. HiPP brought it in for 2026 as the replacement for its discontinued HiPP BIO milk line — PRE, 1, 2, 3 and Kindermilch — and it is more than a change of name. HiPP's own description of the recipe, translated from the German pack, is our new infant formula with high-quality milk fat from organic whole milk. Where most European baby formula starts from skimmed milk and adds vegetable fats back in, PUR keeps the fat that arrives with organic whole milk and tops it up with sunflower and rapeseed oil, without palm oil. HiPP says the recipe is concentrated on selected, high-quality ingredients, with a fatty-acid profile modelled on breast milk.
PRE is HiPP's starter tier. The German pack is marked 0+ Monate — from birth — and HiPP states no upper age limit for it, though our house convention is to treat PRE as the 0–6 month box and move to a follow-on milk when solids begin. Its carbohydrate is lactose only, with no starch, and HiPP's own wording is that it can therefore be given on demand, the way breast milk is. It is a from-birth milk for a bottle-fed baby, whether that is every feed or only some of them.
It is fully organic — EU Bio certified, carrying the EU organic leaf, HiPP's own Bio seal and the organic control body code printed on the pack. It is not Demeter certified, and we would rather say so than let you assume it. One more thing worth knowing before you buy: PUR does not replace HiPP Bio Combiotik, which continues as a separate line. PUR carries no prebiotic GOS and no live culture. If those are what you came for, the Combiotik box is the one to buy.
What's in HiPP PRE PUR per 100ml?
Prepared as directed, every 100ml of HiPP PRE PUR provides 272 kJ / 65 kcal, 1.3 g protein, 3.5 g fat and 7.1 g carbohydrate — all of it lactose, with no starch at all. It carries 13 mg DHA from fish oil and 13 mg ARA from Mortierella alpina oil, alongside 50 mg calcium, 0.53 mg iron and 1.5 µg vitamin D. There is no prebiotic GOS and no live culture in this recipe — the Bio Combiotik line is the one that carries those.

Figures are per 100ml of prepared formula, from HiPP's published data for the German 500 g box. Those 13 mg of DHA work out at 20 mg per 100 kcal, which is exactly the minimum the EU has required of every infant formula since 2020 — met, not exceeded, and we would rather tell you that than let the number imply more than it does. This is HiPP's complete average nutrition declaration for this box. Always check the panel on your own box, since manufacturers reformulate.
What does PUR mean in HiPP PRE PUR?
PUR is HiPP's name for a recipe concentrated on selected, high-quality ingredients, and in practice it means two things you can read straight off the ingredient list. The fat comes substantially from organic whole milk — whole milk powder is 18% of the formula — rather than from skimmed milk with vegetable fats added back in. And lactose is the only carbohydrate, which is why HiPP says PUR can be given on demand like breast milk. The vegetable oils that supply the rest of the fat are sunflower and rapeseed, without palm oil.
This is also where PUR and HiPP's own Bio Combiotik line part company. Combiotik is built around the gut: GOS prebiotic fibre made from the formula's own lactose, plus the live culture Lactobacillus fermentum hereditum. PUR has neither of those. What PUR has instead is the organic milk fat and the palm-oil-free oil blend. Holle's PRE, the other from-birth box parents put beside this one, is a skimmed-milk-and-whey recipe as well. Neither approach is the right one for every baby, and we are not going to pretend our newest box wins on every line.
A word on what none of this means. Organic whole-milk fat, a palm-oil-free oil blend and a lactose-only carbohydrate are not a treatment for colic, reflux, gas, constipation or a diagnosed allergy, and no formula should be sold to you as one. HiPP does flag one ordinary, real change: the new recipe may make your baby's stools slightly softer, closer to a breastfed baby's. If your baby has a medical feeding problem, ask your paediatrician about a hydrolysed or specialist formula instead.
Illustrations are schematic and not to scale. Lactose is a disaccharide of glucose and galactose, and it is the only carbohydrate in this formula; the droplets stand for the fat that comes with the organic whole milk powder, 18% of the recipe.
What is not in HiPP PRE PUR?
There is no starch, no maltodextrin and no added sugar in HiPP PRE PUR — the only carbohydrate is lactose, the same sugar that dominates breast milk — and there is no palm oil. Being straight about the other side: it contains soy lecithin as its emulsifier, so soy is a declared allergen on the pack and this is not a soy-free formula; its DHA comes from fish oil rather than algae, so fish is declared too; and unlike HiPP's Bio Combiotik boxes it contains no prebiotic GOS and no live lactic-acid cultures.

How does HiPP PRE PUR compare to HiPP PRE Bio Combiotik and Holle PRE?
HiPP PRE PUR is the only one of the three built on organic whole-milk fat, and the only one with no palm oil. HiPP PRE Bio Combiotik is the only one carrying a GOS prebiotic and a live culture, and it is the largest box of the three at 600 g. Holle PRE is the only one that is Demeter biodynamic certified and the only one whose DHA comes from microalgae rather than fish oil. All three are organic certified, all three are suitable from birth, and all three are lactose-led.

Being straight with you: if the prebiotic fibre and the live culture are what you want, HiPP PRE Bio Combiotik is the better box and you should buy that one — PUR has neither, and Bio Combiotik is a line HiPP is continuing rather than discontinuing. If a stricter-than-organic certificate is what matters to you, Holle PRE is Demeter biodynamic and HiPP is not, and Holle's DHA comes from algae rather than fish. We stock all three. The packs are three different sizes — 500 g here, 600 g for Bio Combiotik, 400 g for Holle — so compare price per prepared ounce, not price per box. PUR's real advantages are narrower than a headline would have you believe, and worth naming plainly: organic whole-milk fat instead of skimmed milk with added fats, no palm oil, and lactose as the only carbohydrate.
How many boxes of formula will my baby need per month?
One 500 g box of HiPP PRE PUR makes about 132 fl oz of prepared formula, roughly 26 bottles of 5 oz, or the 39 bottles of 100 ml HiPP counts on the pack. A baby taking PUR as their only feed works through about 5 boxes a month from birth to three months, and about 6 boxes a month from three to six months.
Those figures assume PUR is doing all the work. If you are breastfeeding and bottling only some of the feeds, a box lasts considerably longer. Buy a few weeks at a time until you know your own baby's pattern, then stock up — and keep the three-week window in mind once a pouch is open. HiPP made this pack 500 g rather than the old 600 g precisely so an opened pouch is finished inside it.
Estimates for exclusive formula feeding. Every baby feeds differently — use these for planning, not as a target.
How do you prepare HiPP PRE PUR?
Sterilise the bottle, boil fresh water and let it cool to 40–50°C (104–122°F), pour the measured water in first, then add one level scoop (about 4.2 g) for every 30ml of water, shake until the powder has dissolved, cool to about 37°C (98.6°F), test a drop on your wrist, and feed it straight away — HiPP's own instruction is to prepare every bottle fresh before the feed and not to store prepared formula at all.
Sterilise everything
Wash your hands, then sterilise the bottle, teat, cap and ring before every single feed.
Boil and cool the water
Boil fresh drinking water, then let it cool to 40–50°C (104–122°F), the temperature HiPP's own label specifies.
Water into the bottle first
Pour the measured water into the sterilised bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.
Add level scoops
Add one level scoop — about 4.2 g — for every 30ml of water, levelling each scoop against the edge of the pack. Never heap them.
Cap and shake
Close the bottle and shake until the powder has dissolved and none is left clinging to the sides.
Cool, test, feed
Cool to about 37°C (98.6°F), test a drop on the inside of your wrist, and feed immediately. HiPP's instruction is to prepare each bottle fresh and not to store prepared formula.
HiPP prints a feeding table on the box. These are the measures it gives, and they are a guide rather than a target — a baby decides their own feeds.
| Age | Feeds per day | Water | Level scoops | Makes approx. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1–2 | 7–8 | 60 ml | 2 | 70 ml |
| Week 3–4 | 5–7 | 90 ml | 3 | 100 ml |
| Week 5–8 | 5–6 | 120 ml | 4 | 135 ml |
| Month 3–4 | 5 | 150 ml | 5 | 170 ml |
| Month 5 | 4–5 | 180 ml | 6 | 200 ml |
| From month 6 | 4 | 210 ml | 7 | 235 ml |
A note on water temperature. HiPP specifies water at about 40–50°C (104–122°F) for this formula, and that is the instruction printed on your box. HiPP does not publish its reasoning for that range, and we are not going to invent one on its behalf.
You may have read different advice. The World Health Organization and the UK's NHS advise water at 70°C (158°F) or hotter for any powdered formula, because powder is not sterile. In the United States the FDA and CDC take a narrower position: they advise water of at least 158°F (70°C) when a baby is under 2 months old, born prematurely, or has a weakened immune system, and say that for most other babies, preparing formula according to the manufacturer's instructions is considered safe.
If your baby is in one of those higher-risk groups, ask your pediatrician which to follow before using the box's temperature. Whichever you use: sterilise everything, make each bottle fresh, feed it straight away, and never re-use a made-up bottle.
Please read before buying
HiPP PRE PUR contains cow's milk protein, lactose, fish oil and soy lecithin — milk, fish and soy are all declared allergens on the pack. It is not suitable for babies with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy, fish allergy or soy allergy, and it is not a hypoallergenic formula. Breastfeeding is best for your baby — talk to your health visitor or doctor before starting or changing a formula.
Store the powder dry at room temperature — do not refrigerate it. Reseal the inner pouch after every use, and use the box within about three weeks of opening. Never reheat or microwave prepared formula.
PUR or Bio Combiotik?
Both are HiPP, both are organic, both are suitable from birth, and they are two separate lines — PUR replaces the old HiPP BIO milks, not Bio Combiotik. The difference is simple. HiPP PRE Bio Combiotik carries GOS prebiotic fibre and the live culture Lactobacillus fermentum hereditum in a 600 g box. PUR carries organic whole-milk fat and no palm oil in a 500 g box, with no prebiotic and no culture at all. If the prebiotic and the culture are why you are here, buy the Combiotik box.
HiPP PRE PUR: frequently asked questions
Is HiPP PRE PUR suitable from birth?
Yes. The German pack is marked 0+ Monate — from birth — and PRE is HiPP's starter tier. HiPP states no upper age limit for it, so there is no date by which you must move on, though our house convention is to treat PRE as the 0–6 month box and switch to a follow-on milk once solids begin. Because the carbohydrate is lactose only, HiPP says PUR can be given on demand, the way breast milk is.
What is the difference between HiPP PRE PUR and HiPP PRE Bio Combiotik?
Bio Combiotik carries a GOS prebiotic fibre and the live culture Lactobacillus fermentum hereditum; PUR carries neither. PUR carries 18% organic whole milk powder for its milk fat and uses sunflower and rapeseed oil with no palm oil. They are separate lines — PUR is the 2026 replacement for HiPP's discontinued BIO milks, while Bio Combiotik continues — and the boxes are different sizes, 500 g for PUR and 600 g for Bio Combiotik. If you want the prebiotic and the live culture, buy Bio Combiotik.
Is HiPP PRE PUR organic, and is it Demeter certified?
It is fully organic: EU Bio certified, with the EU organic leaf, HiPP's own Bio seal and the organic control body code printed on the pack. It is not Demeter certified. Demeter is a biodynamic standard stricter than EU Organic, and in this catalogue it belongs to parts of the Holle range. If Demeter is what you are after, Holle PRE is the box to buy and we stock it.
Does HiPP PRE PUR contain palm oil, starch or maltodextrin?
No to all three. The vegetable oils are sunflower and rapeseed, with no palm oil, and much of the fat comes from the organic whole milk powder itself. There is no starch and no maltodextrin: the only carbohydrate is lactose, 7.1 g per 100ml of prepared formula, and there are no added sugars such as sucrose or glucose syrup.
Is HiPP PRE PUR soy-free or gluten-free?
It is not soy-free. The emulsifier is organic soy lecithin, and soy is one of three declared allergens on this pack alongside milk and fish. If you have seen this formula described as soy-free anywhere, that description is wrong. On gluten: no gluten-containing ingredient appears in the composition, but gluten-free is not a claim HiPP prints on this box, so it is not a claim we will make for it either. If your baby has a diagnosed allergy, speak to your doctor before choosing any formula.
What water temperature does HiPP PRE PUR need?
HiPP's instruction is water boiled and then cooled to about 40–50°C (104–122°F) before the powder goes in, with the made-up bottle cooled to roughly 37°C (98.6°F), body temperature, before feeding. That mixing temperature is lower than the 70°C (158°F) the WHO and the NHS advise for powdered formula generally, and HiPP does not publish its reasoning for the range it prints. US guidance from the FDA and CDC reserves the 70°C method for babies under 2 months old, born prematurely, or with a weakened immune system. If your baby is in one of those groups, ask your pediatrician which to follow.
How do I switch my baby onto HiPP PRE PUR?
HiPP's own guidance is to change one bottle a day: one PUR bottle on the first day, two on the second, and so on until the switch is complete. Never mix two different powders in the same bottle. HiPP also notes that the new recipe may make your baby's stools slightly softer, closer to a breastfed baby's — that is HiPP saying so, not us, and it is a normal change rather than a problem.
How many bottles does one 500 g box of HiPP PRE PUR make?
About 132 fl oz of prepared formula, which is roughly 26 bottles of 5 oz, using the standard ratio of one level scoop to every 30ml of water. HiPP states 39 bottles of 100 ml per box on the pack, which is 3.9 litres. Your actual bottle count depends on the size of your baby's feeds — a newborn on 2 to 3 oz feeds will get considerably more bottles out of a box than a five-month-old on 7 oz. Remember to finish an opened pouch within about three weeks.
