Holle Penguin Porridge Pouch, Apple and Berries with Oats and Quinoa, 110 g, from 12 months
Penguin Porridge is a Holle organic porridge pouch for toddlers from 12 months, in a resealable 110 g pouch. It is apple at 40 percent with a rice drink base, strawberry at 10 percent, blueberry at 9 percent, oat flakes at 4 percent and quinoa at 1.5 percent. The fruit, the rice drink and the oats are Demeter grade, the biodynamic tier above EU Organic, and Holle declares the pouch vegan and lactose free.
This is a porridge rather than a fruit puree, and that is the whole difference. A fruit pouch is fruit; this one is a breakfast. The oat flakes and the quinoa are real grains in real quantities, and the base is a rice drink rather than water, so what comes out of the pouch is a complete cereal meal rather than a fruit course.
It is also the reason the age is 12 months and not 6 or 8. Holle places this pouch from one year, which is later than any of its fruit pouches. Quinoa, oat flakes and a hydrolysed rice drink together make a more substantial meal than a baby in the first year needs from a pouch.
The two berries are what the penguin on the front is selling, and they do more than decorate: strawberry at 10 percent and blueberry at 9 percent are nearly a fifth of the pouch between them. That is a real berry content, and it is why the porridge is purple-pink rather than oat-colored.
Holle states the pouch has no added sugar, footnoted to say it contains naturally occurring sugars and sugars from rice hydrolysis. That second part matters and is unusual enough to be worth knowing: hydrolysing rice breaks its starch down into simpler sugars, which is what makes a rice drink taste sweet without anything being added to it. Holle describes the pouch as 100 percent organic with biodynamic Demeter ingredients.

Where it fits
Where this pouch sits in the toddler day
This is a breakfast, and Holle sells it as one. It is also a reasonable snack between meals when a toddler needs something more substantial than fruit, because the oats, the quinoa and the rice drink give it the staying power a fruit pouch does not have.
From 12 months a child is eating family food, and a pouch is a convenience rather than a staple. Where it earns its place is away from home: a sealed porridge that needs no bowl, no spoon-and-pan and no fridge is genuinely useful on a morning out, on a train, or in a bag for the first hour of a nursery day.
It is not a replacement for a milk feed. The base here is a rice drink, which is a plant drink rather than a milk, so this pouch does not do the job that milk or a milk cereal does. Treat it as the cereal part of a meal, with milk alongside if that is still part of your child's day.
If your child is under one year
This pouch is from 12 months and is not suitable earlier. Holle's fruit pouches start much sooner: Pelican Peach is from the 6th month with gluten-free oat in it, and Kiwi Koala is from the 8th month with three fruits and no grain at all.
Serving and storage
How to serve it, and how to store it once opened
Spoon it out rather than letting your child suck on the pouch
Holle's standing guidance across its pouch range is to feed the puree with a spoon and not to let a child suck on the pouch continuously, because prolonged sucking on a sweet puree is what causes tooth decay. Keep the cap out of reach, because a cap this size is a choking hazard. The pouch needs no cooking, no water and no warming.
Once opened, this pouch keeps in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Unopened it is shelf-stable, which is the point of a pouch: it travels without a cool pack.

1
Check the pouch first
Look it over before you open it. The cap should be sealed and the pouch firm rather than puffed. If it has been punctured in a bag, do not use it.
2
Shake it, then unscrew the cap
A porridge separates more than a fruit puree does as it stands, because the grain settles. A good shake before you open it saves you stirring the bowl.
3
Squeeze it into a bowl
Squeeze out the portion you want rather than feeding from the spout. It also lets you see how much your child has actually taken.
4
Put the cap somewhere safe
The screw cap is small enough to be a choking hazard. It goes on the counter, not on the tray.
5
Spoon-feed at your child's pace
Offer it from the spoon. A pouch fed by squeezing goes down far faster than a child would take it from a spoon, which is the habit the tooth-decay note is about.
6
Refrigerate or discard the rest
Cap what is left, put it in the fridge, and use it within 2 days. Do not keep a pouch your child has fed directly from.

This pouch contains oat flakes and is not declared gluten free. Keep the cap out of reach, because it is a small part. By percentage
What is in the pouch, by percentage
Apple leads at 40 percent, the two berries come to 19 percent between them, and the grains are the oat flakes at 4 percent with quinoa at 1.5 percent. The rice drink is the base the whole thing is built on.

These are the percentages Holle publishes for Penguin Porridge on its own site. The percentage for the rice drink is not legible on Holle's published declaration, so it is shown above as not published rather than estimated, and no figure has been carried across from any sibling pouch. The 4.2 percent is the hydrolysed rice inside the rice drink, which is the figure Holle does give. The panel printed on the pouch in your hand is the one that governs.
Ingredients and allergens
What is in it
Contains oats, and is not declared gluten free
ALLERGY ADVICE: this pouch contains OAT flakes, declared in capital letters in the ingredient list. Holle applies no gluten-free label to this product, unlike its fruit pouches that use a gluten-free oat. Do not give it to a child who must avoid gluten or oats.
Holle does list the pouch as vegan, as vegetarian and as lactose free. There is no milk and no egg in the recipe: the base is a rice drink, which is a plant drink. Read the pouch before you open it, because recipes are revised and the pouch in your hand governs.
* from organic agriculture. ** Demeter, from biodynamic agriculture.
Reproduced from the ingredient declaration Holle publishes for this product, except that the percentage for the rice drink is not legible on that declaration and is therefore omitted rather than guessed. Holle gives no total Demeter percentage for this recipe, so none is stated here.
No added sugar: Holle states the pouch has no added sugar, footnoted to say that it contains naturally occurring sugars and sugars from rice hydrolysis. The first come from the apple and the berries; the second are produced when the rice in the rice drink is hydrolysed.
Holle publishes no country of origin for the main ingredients of this pouch.
Read as a list, that is three fruits, a rice drink and two grains. No water beyond what is in the rice drink, no thickener, no starch, no juice concentrate and no additive appears in the declaration.

Holle publishes no portion count for this pouch, so no number of servings is claimed here. The net weight is 110 g per pouch, taken from this product. The fridge life is this product's own stated figure: up to 2 days after opening. A pouch your child has fed from directly should not be kept. No nutrition panel is published for this product, so no energy or sugar figure per pouch is shown.

Questions parents ask
Frequently asked questions
From what age can my child have Penguin Porridge?
From 12 months, which is the age on this product and the age Holle publishes for it. It is a grain-based porridge with quinoa and oats in it, which is why it sits later than Holle's fruit pouches.
How much is in the pouch?
110 g, which is the net weight on this product. The weight printed on the back of the pouch governs.
Is it gluten free?
No. It contains OAT flakes, declared in capital letters, and Holle applies no gluten-free label to this pouch. Some of Holle's fruit pouches use an oat that is specifically declared gluten free; this one does not.
Does it contain milk?
No. The base is a rice drink, which is a plant drink made from water, hydrolysed rice and sunflower oil. Holle lists the pouch as vegan and lactose free, so it is not a milk cereal and does not replace a milk feed.
Does it contain added sugar?
No sugar is added. Holle states no added sugar and footnotes that the pouch contains naturally occurring sugars and sugars from rice hydrolysis. Hydrolysing rice breaks its starch into simpler sugars, which is what makes a rice drink taste sweet without anything being stirred in.
Why does the page not give a percentage for the rice drink?
Because Holle's own published declaration for this pouch does not show one legibly. Rather than estimate it or copy the figure from a sibling pouch, it is left as not published. The 4.2 percent shown is the hydrolysed rice inside the rice drink, which Holle does state.
Can my child feed straight from the pouch?
Holle's guidance across its pouches is to use a spoon and not to let a child suck on the pouch continuously, because prolonged sucking on a sweet puree is what causes tooth decay. Squeeze it into a bowl and spoon it.
How long does it keep once opened?
Up to 2 days in the refrigerator, capped. Unopened it needs no refrigeration at all, which is what makes it useful away from home.
Written from Holle's own published product page for Penguin Porridge - Apple and Berries with Oat and Quinoa, which is the source of truth for this recipe and which gives the apple 40 percent, strawberry 10 percent, blueberry 9 percent, OAT flakes 4 percent and quinoa 1.5 percent declaration with its rice drink base and hydrolysed rice at 4.2 percent, the Demeter certification, the no-added-sugar statement with its naturally-occurring-sugars and rice-hydrolysis footnote, and the vegan, vegetarian and lactose-free declarations. Holle applies no gluten-free label to this pouch and none is claimed here. The percentage for the rice drink is not legible on Holle's declaration and has been left as not published rather than estimated. Holle's product page publishes no nutrition table, no allergen declaration, no total Demeter percentage, no country of origin and no per-product serving or storage text; the 12-month age, the 110 g net weight and the 2-day opened-fridge life are taken from this product itself, and the spoon-feeding and cap guidance is Holle's standing guidance for its pouch range.
