How many cans will my baby need?
Running out mid-week means a late-night store run, or switching formula on your baby. Work out how much to keep on hand.

Breast milk is best for babies. These are stock-planning estimates, not feeding advice. Every baby is different — always follow the feeding table on the can and your paediatrician's guidance on how much your baby should actually take.
Ranges assume the standard one-scoop-per-30ml preparation. Real usage shifts with growth spurts, starting solids, and how much formula ends up on the floor.
What is Holle Goat Milk Stage 4 Dutch toddler formula?
Holle Goat Milk Stage 4 Dutch is a goat milk organic toddler formula — a growing-up milk for children 12 months and older, made from full-cream organic goat's milk with no palm oil. It is not the cow-milk Stage 4 can. This listing is a single 800 g can, about 200 fl oz of prepared milk.
This is a toddler growing-up milk, not an infant formula. At 12 months your child is eating a varied solid diet, and this can is the milk part of that diet rather than a meal replacement. It works in a beaker or a bottle, and it is fortified with the iron, calcium, zinc, iodine, vitamin C and DHA that a plain milk drink does not carry.
The reason to choose a goat milk toddler formula over ordinary cow's milk at this age comes down to two things. Goat milk is naturally rich in A2 beta-casein rather than the A1 type common in standard cow milk, which forms a softer, smaller curd in the stomach. And a fortified growing-up milk fills nutrient gaps — particularly iron and vitamin D — that plain milk leaves open in toddlers who are fussy eaters or still finding their way with solids.
Holle Nährmittel AG was founded in Arlesheim, Switzerland, in 1933 and is one of Europe's oldest organic baby-food makers. This can is part of the brand's smaller specialty goat-milk range, sold in the Dutch and Benelux market in the same 800 g format as the cow line, running Stage 1 through Stage 4. It carries EU Organic certification. This stage does not carry Demeter certification — see the questions below.
In the feeding journey this can sits at the end. Before it is Holle Goat Stage 3 Dutch for 10+ months, which is Demeter certified. After it there is no further stage — most children move on to ordinary family milk and food, on a timetable your paediatrician can help you set.
What's in Holle Goat Milk Stage 4 Dutch?
Full-cream organic goat's milk leads the ingredient list, with lactose, goat milk powder, organic sunflower and rapeseed oils, maltodextrin and starch. DHA comes from microalgae oil at roughly 13 mg per 100 ml prepared, and the can carries vitamin C, iron, zinc, calcium and iodine alongside the standard European vitamin and mineral spread. There is no palm oil and no fish oil.
| Ingredient | What it is doing in the can |
|---|---|
| Full-cream organic goat milk | The base. Whole rather than skimmed, and naturally A2 beta-casein protein. |
| Lactose | The milk sugar, the main carbohydrate carried through from earlier stages. |
| Goat milk powder | Brings protein and minerals to the level a toddler needs from a milk drink. |
| Vegetable oils | Sunflower and rapeseed. No palm oil — a real difference from Holle's cow line. |
| Maltodextrin and starch | Standard carbohydrates for a toddler-stage formula. Not a red flag at this age. |
| Microalgae oil (DHA) | Long-chain omega-3, plant sourced. About 13 mg per 100 ml. No fish oil. |
| Iron, zinc, calcium, iodine | The minerals a fortified growing-up milk adds that plain milk does not carry. |
| Vitamin C and the EU vitamin spread | The fortification required of a European toddler milk. |
One composition note Holle publishes is worth repeating because it tells you how concentrated the powder is: 100 g of this powder is made from about 320 ml of full-cream goat's milk. That is a whole-milk product, not skimmed milk rebuilt with vegetable fat, and the sunflower and rapeseed blend is added to a milk base rather than replacing it.
The full per-100 ml nutrition panel is printed on the can. We would rather send you to the label than reprint figures we cannot check against the batch in your hands. Allergen: contains milk (goat).
Why give a toddler goat milk formula instead of cow's milk?
Two reasons. Goat milk is predominantly A2 beta-casein, the protein type that forms a softer, smaller curd in the stomach than the A1 and A2 mix in standard cow's milk. And a fortified growing-up milk carries iron, zinc, iodine, vitamin D and DHA at levels plain milk does not.
The protein difference sits at a single position in the chain. Where A1 beta-casein carries histidine at position 67, A2 carries proline. That one residue changes how the chain is broken apart during digestion, and with it how firmly the curd sets. It is a structural fact about the milk, not a marketing claim.
The fortification argument is the more practical one at 12 months. Toddlers are famously unreliable eaters, and iron in particular is easy to fall short on once breast milk or infant formula stops. A stage-appropriate milk drink covers some of that gap on the days when meals do not go to plan.
What goat milk formula is not: a treatment for cow's milk protein allergy. Goat and cow milk proteins cross-react in most allergic children, so a diagnosed allergy needs a hydrolysed or amino-acid formula prescribed by your doctor. Goat milk is a reasonable gentler option for an unsettled toddler with no diagnosis. If you suspect an allergy, see a doctor rather than switching species.
Position 67 is the single amino-acid difference between the two protein variants. It changes how the chain breaks down during digestion, and with it how the curd sets.
Schematic illustration of protein structure and curd formation. Every baby digests differently, and no formula is a substitute for medical advice.
What is not in Holle Goat Milk Stage 4 Dutch?
No palm oil, no fish oil, no soy, no gluten, no GMOs and no artificial additives. The DHA is plant sourced from microalgae rather than fish, and the absence of palm oil is a genuine point of difference from Holle's own cow-milk line, which does contain it.
- No palm oil
- No fish oil
- Algae-sourced DHA
- No soy
- Gluten free
- Non-GMO
- No artificial additives
- Full-cream goat milk base
Does contain maltodextrin and starch, which are standard for a toddler-stage formula and expected at this age. Allergen: contains milk (goat).
How does Holle Goat Stage 4 Dutch compare to Holle Goat 4 German and Holle Cow Stage 4 Dutch?
The first row is the one that matters: two of these are goat milk and one is cow milk. This can and the German Holle Goat 4 are both goat, both palm-oil-free and both algae-DHA; the Holle Cow Stage 4 Dutch is a cow-milk toddler milk that contains palm oil. None of the three carries Demeter certification at Stage 4, unlike Holle's Stages 1 to 3.

Being straight with you: the other two each do something this can does not. Holle Cow Milk Stage 4 Dutch publishes a complete per-100 ml nutrition panel — 64 kcal, 1.3 g protein, 74.3 mg calcium, 1.0 mg iron — where the goat can does not, so if you want to see the numbers before you buy, that is the one that shows them. It is cow milk and it contains palm oil, which is the trade. Holle Goat 4 German is the same stage in goat milk with added amino acids (L-cystine, L-tryptophan, L-tyrosine) that are not published for this Dutch can. Watch the pack size: the German box holds 400 g, half the powder of these 800 g cans, so compare cost per prepared ounce rather than per pack. And on certification — Stages 1 to 3 of the Dutch goat line are Demeter confirmed, but Stage 4 is not, so if biodynamic certification is your reason for buying Holle, Stage 3 is the certified can and it is suitable from 10 months.
How many cans of Holle Goat Stage 4 will my toddler need per month?
About one 800 g can a month for a typical toddler at this stage, because at 12 months milk is a drink alongside meals rather than the meal itself. One can makes roughly 200 fl oz of prepared milk, so the real answer depends almost entirely on how many cups a day your child has.
The arithmetic is simple enough to do for your own household: 200 fl oz divided by the ounces your toddler drinks each day gives you the days a can lasts. The bars below run that sum for one, two and three five-ounce cups a day.
These are planning figures worked from the can's prepared yield, not a manufacturer feeding target. Follow the feeding table printed on the can, and treat this milk as a complement to a varied solid-food diet rather than a meal replacement. Every child drinks differently.
How do you prepare Holle Goat Milk Stage 4 Dutch?
Sterilise the bottle or beaker, boil fresh water and let it cool to about 40–50 °C, pour the measured water in first, then add powder using the scoop enclosed in this goat can at the ratio printed on it. Shake until fully dissolved, test the temperature, serve within one hour and discard anything left.
Sterilise everything
Wash your hands, then sterilise the bottle or beaker, teat, ring and cap before every use.
Boil, then cool to 40–50 °C
Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to the temperature printed on the can, about 40–50 °C.
Water into the bottle first
Pour the measured water into the sterilised bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.
Use this can's own scoop
Use the scoop enclosed in this goat can and the ratio printed on it. Never borrow the ratio from a cow-milk can.
Shake until dissolved
Close the bottle and shake until the powder has completely dissolved, with no lumps left at the base.
Test, serve, then discard
Check the temperature before serving, use within one hour, and throw away anything left in the cup.
A note on water temperature. Holle specifies water at 40–50 °C for this formula, and that is the instruction printed on your can. It is set deliberately — hotter water damages the heat-sensitive vitamins this formula is built around.
Many health authorities, including the NHS and WHO, advise 70 °C or hotter for any powdered formula, because powder is not sterile and that temperature kills bacteria that can occasionally be present. The difference matters most for newborns, premature babies, and babies with weakened immunity. If your baby is in one of those groups, ask your paediatrician or health visitor which to follow for your situation.

This is a goat milk toddler formula for children 12 months and older, not an infant formula and not the cow-milk Stage 4 can. Goat milk formula is not a treatment for cow's milk protein allergy — goat and cow milk proteins cross-react in most children with a diagnosed allergy, so speak to your doctor about a prescribed hydrolysed or amino-acid formula instead. This milk is a supplement alongside solid foods, not a meal replacement. Breastfeeding is best for your baby — talk to your health visitor or doctor before starting or changing a formula.
Store cans in a cool, dry place with the lid firmly closed. Never reheat or microwave prepared milk. Follow the feeding table printed on the can and consult your paediatrician for guidance specific to your child.
Packaging & cans
Cans sometimes pick up small dents under pressure in transit. A dent in the outer can does not affect the sealed powder inside, and the seal on every can we ship is intact. If a seal is ever broken, or the powder looks or smells wrong, do not use it — message us and we will replace it.
Holle Goat Milk Stage 4 Dutch: frequently asked questions
Is this the goat can or the cow can?
This page is the goat milk Stage 4 Dutch can. Holle sells a separate cow-milk Stage 4 Dutch toddler formula that is also 800 g, also labelled Stage 4, also Dutch and also for 12 months and older — the only difference is the animal the milk came from. If you meant to buy cow milk, use the Holle Cow Milk Stage 4 Dutch listing instead. If you meant goat, you are in the right place. The Dutch retail name for this one is Holle Dreumesmelk van Geitenmelk 4.
Is Holle Goat Stage 4 Dutch Demeter certified?
This can carries EU Organic certification and nothing beyond it. Demeter is granted per product rather than per brand, and no Holle Stage 4 carries it — not in the Dutch line, not in the German line, cow or goat. Stages 1, 2 and 3 of the Dutch goat line all are Demeter certified. If biodynamic certification is your reason for choosing Holle, Holle Goat Stage 3 Dutch is the certified can and it is suitable from 10 months.
What age is Holle Goat Stage 4 Dutch for?
Twelve months and older. This is a toddler growing-up milk, not an infant formula, and it is meant to be the milk part of a varied solid-food diet rather than a sole source of nutrition. It can be served in a beaker or a bottle. The stage before it is Holle Goat Stage 3 Dutch for 10+ months, and there is no Stage 5 — children generally move on to ordinary family milk and food after this.
Why give a toddler goat milk formula instead of plain cow's milk?
Two reasons. Goat milk is naturally rich in A2 beta-casein rather than the A1 type in standard cow milk, and A2 protein forms a softer, smaller curd during digestion. And a fortified growing-up milk carries iron, zinc, iodine, calcium, vitamin C and DHA at levels plain milk does not, which matters for toddlers who are unreliable eaters. Whether your child needs a fortified milk at all is a good question for your paediatrician.
Can I use goat milk formula if my child has a cow's milk allergy?
No. Goat milk formula is not a treatment for cow's milk protein allergy. Goat and cow milk proteins are structurally close enough that most children with a confirmed allergy react to both, which is why goat milk is not classed as hypoallergenic. A diagnosed allergy needs a hydrolysed or amino-acid formula prescribed by a doctor. Goat milk is a reasonable gentler option for an unsettled toddler with no diagnosis.
Does Holle Goat Stage 4 Dutch contain palm oil?
No. The fat blend is organic sunflower and rapeseed oil only. That is a genuine difference from Holle's own cow-milk line, which does contain palm oil at the equivalent stage. There is also no fish oil in this can — the DHA comes from microalgae oil at roughly 13 mg per 100 ml prepared. The can does contain maltodextrin and starch, which are standard carbohydrates for a toddler-stage formula.
How much prepared milk does one 800 g can make?
Approximately 200 fluid ounces of prepared milk per 800 g can. For a toddler having one five-ounce cup a day that is about three quarters of a can a month; at two cups a day it is about a can and a half; at three cups a day about two and a quarter cans. A typical toddler at this stage works out around one can a month. Actual yield depends on how accurately each scoop is levelled off.
What Baby Brezza setting should I use for Holle Goat Stage 4 Dutch?
Baby Brezza has not published a setting for this formula, so we do not list one — and we will not guess at it, because a wrong setting means a wrongly concentrated bottle. Prepare this one by hand using the feeding chart printed on your can. If Baby Brezza publishes a figure for it, we will add it to this page. One caution if you already use a Brezza with another Holle formula: do not assume the same setting carries across. Powder density differs between stages and between the goat and cow lines, so a setting that is right for one can be wrong for another.
