What is Kendamil Organic Stage 1 formula?

Kendamil Organic Stage 1 is a British organic baby formula for babies from birth to 6 months, made from organic whole cow's milk, with no palm oil, no fish oil and no maltodextrin. This listing is a single 800g tin — about 210 fl oz of prepared formula, roughly 42 five-ounce bottles.

What separates it from most European baby formula on the shelf is the starting material. Most formulas begin by stripping the natural fat out of milk and adding vegetable oils back in to hit the fat target. The milk comes from grass-fed herds on small farms around Kendal, in the English Lake District, where Kendal Nutricare has run the factory since 2015. Organic Stage 1 is built on organic whole milk plus organic skimmed milk, which makes it the leaner of the two. Bio Nature Stage 1 uses organic whole milk plus organic cream, which makes it richer. Both are EU Organic certified; the difference is the fat profile, not the certificate.

What's in Kendamil Organic Stage 1 per 100ml?

Prepared as directed, every 100ml provides 66 kcal, 3.5g fat, 1.4g protein, 7g carbohydrate, 45.2mg calcium, 0.7mg iron and 16.1mg DHA sourced from microalgae. The prebiotic is GOS, and the carbohydrate is lactose — there is no maltodextrin, starch or added sugar.

The whey-to-casein ratio is 60:40, the ratio found in mature breast milk and the reason a first infant milk digests faster than a follow-on or toddler milk. The ingredient deck opens with organic whole milk, organic demineralised whey protein and organic skimmed milk, followed by an organic sunflower, coconut and rapeseed oil blend and organic galacto-oligosaccharides. DHA comes from Schizochytrium microalgae oil and ARA from Mortierella alpina, so there is no fish oil anywhere in the tin. Nucleotides, taurine, choline, inositol and the full EU-mandated vitamin and mineral spread complete the recipe. Allergen: milk.

Why is Kendamil Organic Stage 1 made from whole milk instead of skimmed milk?

Because the fat is where the milk fat globule membrane lives. Kendamil builds this formula on organic whole milk and keeps its natural milk fat in place, rather than skimming the milk and rebuilding the fat entirely from vegetable oils — which is how most infant formula on both sides of the Atlantic is made.

Skimming is not done to harm anything; it is done because it is easier to standardise a fat blend you build yourself than one that arrives in the milk. But the membrane that wraps each natural fat globule — a layer of phospholipids and proteins — does not survive that process. Starting from whole milk is slower and more expensive, and it is the single clearest reason to pay a premium for this tin over a cheaper organic formula.

All three are certified organic European first infant milks. Kendamil is the only one of the three built on whole milk with no palm oil and algae-sourced DHA. HiPP is the only one with a live probiotic culture, and Holle is the only one certified Demeter biodynamic on top of EU Organic.
