How many cans will my baby need?

Running out mid-week means a late-night store run, or switching formula on your baby. Work out how much to keep on hand.

Breast milk is best for babies. These are stock-planning estimates, not feeding advice. Every baby is different — always follow the feeding table on the can and your paediatrician's guidance on how much your baby should actually take.

Ranges assume the standard one-scoop-per-30ml preparation. Real usage shifts with growth spurts, starting solids, and how much formula ends up on the floor.

Single 800g Can · EU Bio Nature

What is Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1 formula?

Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1 is a British organic first infant milk for babies from birth to 6 months, made from organic whole milk and organic cream, with no palm oil, no fish oil and no maltodextrin. This listing is a single 800g can — about 210 fl oz of prepared formula, roughly 42 five-ounce bottles.

Bio Nature is Kendamil's EU-market organic can, and Stage 1 is the richest step in the range. It is built on organic whole milk plus organic cream rather than skimmed milk rebuilt with vegetable oils, which is how most European baby formula is made. Because the natural milk fat stays in, the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) that surrounds it survives into the powder instead of being stripped out and replaced.

If you are also looking at Kendamil Organic Stage 1, the difference at this stage is the base and nothing more dramatic than that. Both cans are organic certified, both are palm-oil-free, both use algae DHA and both run a 60:40 whey-to-casein protein ratio. Bio Nature 1 uses whole milk plus cream; Organic Stage 1 uses whole milk plus skimmed milk and no cream. Bio Nature is the richer of the two, Organic is the leaner. Neither is "the upgrade".

The protein ratio is what makes this a first infant milk rather than a follow-on. At 60:40 whey to casein it is the only Bio Nature stage that is whey-dominant, mirroring the balance a newborn's digestion is built around. It is a complete food: use it as your baby's sole nutrition from day one, or alongside breastfeeding as a top-up. It is made in Kendal, in the English Lake District, by the only British-owned formula manufacturer, using milk from grass-fed herds on small local farms. At around six months, when solids start, the next step is Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2.

What's in Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1 per 100ml?

Prepared as directed, every 100ml provides 277 kJ / 66 kcal, 3.5g fat, 1.4g protein at a 60:40 whey-to-casein ratio, 45.2mg calcium and 16.1mg DHA sourced from microalgae. The prebiotic is organic GOS from milk, and the carbohydrate is organic lactose. There is no maltodextrin, no starch and no added sugar.

The ingredient deck opens with organic whole milk — 147g of liquid milk per 100g of powder — followed by organic whey protein, organic lactose, an organic sunflower, coconut and rapeseed oil blend, organic galacto-oligosaccharides and organic cream. DHA comes from Schizochytrium microalgae oil and ARA from Mortierella alpina, so there is no fish oil anywhere in the can. Nucleotides, choline, taurine, inositol and the full EU-mandated vitamin and mineral spread complete the recipe.

Carbohydrate grams and iron are not published in the data we hold for this can — the printed panel on your can is the authority. Kendamil reformulates from time to time, so always read the label you have in your hand.

How it's made

Why is Kendamil made from whole milk instead of skimmed milk?

Because the fat is where the milk fat globule membrane lives. Kendamil builds Bio Nature Stage 1 on organic whole milk and organic cream and keeps the natural milk fat in place, rather than skimming the milk and rebuilding the fat from vegetable oils — which is how most infant formula in Europe is made.

This is the one manufacturing choice that runs through Kendamil's whole range, and it is the reason the brand is worth a second look. Skimming milk and adding a vegetable oil blend back in is cheaper, more consistent and perfectly legal — it is the industry default. What it removes along the way is the membrane structure that naturally wraps each fat globule in milk. Kendamil starts from the other end: whole milk first, oils added on top to balance the fat profile, not to replace it.

What is not in Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1?

No palm oil, no fish oil, no maltodextrin, no starch, no corn syrup and no added sugar. The DHA comes from microalgae rather than fish, which makes the formula suitable for vegetarian families, and the whole can is certified organic to EU Organic and UK Soil Association standards. It is non-GMO and gluten-free.

Comparison

How does Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1 compare to Kendamil Organic Stage 1 and HiPP Stage 1?

Bio Nature 1 and Kendamil Organic 1 are near twins — same certification, same 60:40 protein ratio, same algae DHA, no palm oil in either. The only real difference is the base: Bio Nature uses organic whole milk plus cream, Organic uses organic whole milk plus skimmed milk. HiPP Stage 1 is the genuinely different can: skimmed-milk based with palm oil and fish-oil DHA, but the only one of the three with a live probiotic culture.

Being straight with you: if you want a first infant milk with a live probiotic culture, HiPP Stage 1 is the only one of these three that has one, and it carries more calcium — Kendamil has no probiotic at any stage. HiPP also comes in a 600g box rather than an 800g can, so compare price per ounce and not per pack, or the numbers will mislead you. And if Vegetarian Society, Halal or Kosher marks matter to your household, Kendamil Organic Stage 1 carries them and Bio Nature does not. Bio Nature 1's real advantages are the cream-enriched whole-milk base, the palm-oil-free and fish-oil-free recipe and the dual EU Organic plus Soil Association certification — not a nutritional leap over its own sibling.

Planning ahead

How many cans of formula will my baby need per month?

An exclusively formula-fed newborn typically uses about 3 to 4 cans of Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1 per month, trending toward the higher end as they approach 6 months. One 800g can makes roughly 210 fl oz of prepared formula, which is about 42 five-ounce bottles.

Intake roughly doubles across the first half-year, so plan against the top of the range rather than the bottom if your baby is past three months. Any breastfeeding alongside formula pulls the figure down. Usage drops noticeably once solids arrive, which is why Stage 2 and Stage 3 need fewer cans per month than Stage 1 does.

Estimates for exclusive formula feeding, from standard feeding guidelines rather than manufacturer-published figures. Every baby feeds differently — use these for planning, not as a target.

Preparation

How do you prepare Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1?

Boil fresh water and let it cool for no more than 30 minutes so it stays at least 70°C, pour the measured water into a sterilised bottle first, then add the number of level scoops your can's feeding chart gives for your baby's age, shake to dissolve, cool to body temperature and feed. Discard anything left after 2 hours.

70°C+Water temperature
Can chartLevel scoops by age
2 hoursDiscard after feeding starts
1

Sterilise everything

Wash and sterilise the bottle, teat, ring and cap, and wash your hands before you start.

2

Boil and cool

Boil fresh drinking water and leave it to cool for no more than 30 minutes, so it stays at least 70°C.

3

Water into the bottle first

Pour the measured water into the sterilised bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.

4

Add level scoops

Add the number of level scoops your can's feeding chart gives for your baby's age, levelling each one with the back of a clean knife — never packed or heaped.

5

Cap and shake

Put the cap on and shake well for about ten seconds until the powder has fully dissolved.

6

Cool, test, feed

Cool the bottle under running water, test a drop on your wrist so it feels body temperature, and feed straight away.

Never use artificially softened water or water that has been boiled more than once. Prepare a fresh bottle for every feed, never reheat, never microwave, and discard anything left 2 hours after your baby starts drinking.

A note on water temperature. Kendamil specifies water at 70°C or hotter, which matches NHS and WHO guidance for powdered formula — powder is not sterile, and that temperature kills bacteria that can occasionally be present. Let the bottle cool to body temperature before feeding, and always test a drop on the inside of your wrist first.

Please read before buying

This is a cow's milk formula and is not suitable for babies with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy — a diagnosed allergy needs an extensively hydrolysed or amino-acid formula prescribed by your doctor. Breastfeeding is best for your baby — talk to your health visitor or doctor before starting or changing a formula.

Store cans in a cool, dry place. Once opened, use within the period printed on the can. Never reheat or microwave prepared formula.

Packaging & cans

Formula cans are thin-walled metal and can pick up dents under pressure in transit. A dent in the outer can does not affect the sealed powder inside. If a seal is ever broken or the powder looks or smells wrong, do not use it — message us and we will replace it.

Questions parents ask

Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1: frequently asked questions

What age is Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1 for?

Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1 is a first infant milk for babies from birth to 6 months. It is a complete food and can be your baby's sole source of nutrition from day one, or a top-up alongside breastfeeding. At around six months, once your baby has started solid food, you would move on to Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2, the follow-on milk for 6 to 12 months.

What is the difference between Kendamil Bio Nature and Kendamil Organic at Stage 1?

At Stage 1 the difference is the milk base and very little else. Bio Nature Stage 1 is built on organic whole milk plus organic cream; Kendamil Organic Stage 1 is built on organic whole milk plus organic skimmed milk with no cream, which makes it the leaner of the two. Both are organic certified, both are palm-oil-free, both use microalgae DHA, and both run the same 60:40 whey-to-casein protein ratio with the same published calcium and DHA figures. Bio Nature is Kendamil's EU-market organic can and Organic is its UK-market one.

Is Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1 organic?

Yes. Kendamil states that Bio Nature is certified by two standards bodies: EU Organic Certification and the UK Soil Association. It is also non-GMO and gluten-free. It is not Demeter or Bioland certified — those are biodynamic and German-organic standards that belong to other brands, and no Kendamil product carries them. If a biodynamic certificate is what you are shopping for, look at the Holle range instead.

Does Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1 contain HMOs?

The ingredient panel for Stage 1 lists organic galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) as the prebiotic and does not name a human milk oligosaccharide, even though HMO+ appears in the product's name on some packaging. We would rather say that plainly than let a name on a box do the work. Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2 and Stage 3 do carry an explicitly named HMO, 3'-GL. Check the panel on your own can, as Kendamil reformulates from time to time.

How much prepared formula does one 800g can make?

One 800g can of Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1 makes approximately 210 fluid ounces of prepared formula, which works out at roughly 42 bottles of 5 fl oz each, or about 6.2 litres. Actual yield depends on how accurately each scoop is levelled. For planning, an exclusively formula-fed newborn uses about 3 to 4 cans per month, trending toward the higher end approaching six months.

Does Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1 contain palm oil or fish oil?

Neither. The DHA comes from Schizochytrium microalgae oil rather than fish oil, and the ARA comes from Mortierella alpina, which makes the formula suitable for vegetarian families. The fat blend uses organic sunflower, coconut and rapeseed oils with no palm oil. Kendamil is the only major European infant formula brand with no palm oil anywhere in its range. There is also no maltodextrin, no starch, no corn syrup and no added sugar.

Can I use it if my baby has a cow's milk allergy?

No. Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1 is a cow's milk formula with intact, unhydrolysed milk protein, so it is not suitable for a baby with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy. A diagnosed allergy needs an extensively hydrolysed or amino-acid based formula prescribed by a doctor. If your baby is simply unsettled or gassy without a diagnosis, speak to your health visitor before switching — a partially hydrolysed comfort formula is a different and much milder step.

What formula comes after Stage 1?

Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2 is the follow-on milk, for babies from 6 to 12 months once solid food has been introduced. Stage 2 moves to a casein-dominant 40:60 protein ratio and adds a named HMO. There is no need to switch on your baby's six-month birthday — most parents finish the can they are on first. Move between stages gradually over several days, and speak to your health visitor if you are unsure.
